Max and Maisy’s Happily Ever After
The year 2015 proved to be a big year for Aimee and Dan. As it turned out, that meant it was a big year for a couple of not-so-big dogs, too!

Aimee and Dan got married in the summer of 2015. One of their first acts as newlyweds would be to buy a home. After ten years of apartment living, Aimee was excited at the prospect of having a house—with a yard. That yard, of course, would need a dog!

As the closing date on the house approached, Aimee began looking at shelters and rescue organizations for just the right dog. At the APL, Aimee met Zackery, a small, handsome blond and white spaniel mix. He had been surrendered with his mom, Darla, when their owner could no longer afford to take care of them. Zackery was a little reserved when he met Aimee, but friendly.

Over the next month or so, while waiting to move into their home, Aimee came back to visit Zackery a number of times. Small, healthy dogs normally leave the APL very quickly, but fate must have known good things were in store for Zackery; he was there in his kennel each time Aimee and her husband returned. Zackery began to pull out the stops, laying in Dan’s lap and rolling over for belly rubs. Finally, in late August, about a month after Zackery and Darla came to the APL, Aimee and Dan were in their new home. It was time to take Zackery home!

By that time, however, the APL staff had seen Darla cry whenever Zackery was taken out of their kennel to meet a potential adopter. The dogs were so distressed at being separated that the staff determined that they were in fact a “bonded pair,” to be adopted together if at all possible. Would Aimee and Dan consider opening their new home to not just one but two furkids? It wasn’t an easy decision initially, according to Aimee, but then Darla went to work, turning on the charm, jumping into Aimee’s lap and licking her face. Aimee knew it then: Both dogs were going home—together—to start their new life!

Aimee gave the dogs new names to go with their new lives: Max and Maisy. Max and Maisy quickly adjusted to their new home and family. They sleep wherever they like, and have staked out a spare couch as the perfect place from which to keep an eye on the neighborhood. They are beginning to figure out toys, and go for walks three or four times a day! And whatever they do, they do it together.

“They are just awesome little doggies,” Aimee says. Thank you, Aimee and Dan, for giving them awesome doggie lives!
